I love to go to outdoor shops. Watch what's new in gear, clothing, maps and books (If I where a rich man ....). When I am in England I am especially interested in books and posters. Which shop should I go to when I am in the Lake District next time?

I do not know a good outdoor shop for books and posters but I like the Hawkshead shop in Hawkshead. I bought my walking boots there, they have many special offers and the staff are helpful. There is a book shop near by so I would try there for books it is by a cafe that sells something called a Whig. www.hawkshead.com

George Fisher in Keswick or Gaynors in Ambleside or Laeking outdoors in Coniston are best for clothing, but of course there are loads of other shops in all these places. (BTW, when you are in Ambleside, you need a parking disk to park on the roadside which you can get for free from any shop). The book shop in Hawkshead is A1 for LD books, but the cafe that sell whigs is not a cafe any more unfortunately, its just a shop.

Good to see Laeking Outdoors getting a mention. I went there to buy a tent to replace one that had blown away in the night. Although I was looking for the cheapest one possible the man had all the time in the world to help me find one that was cheap but still good enough to serve it's purpose. 3 Million cheers for the staff at Laeking Outdoors !

Just go to any town and in most there are 3 or more shops.
Why did the Whig shop close? and does this new shop still have whigs?

They changed the cafe/shop into just a shop. There is a photo inside here www.hawksheadrelish.com/and you can still get a whig mix on there to make your own.
