The Cumbrian County Council's plan was to over tourimise* Ambleside and Windermere in hope of a chance to stop the rest of the Lake District being spolt.
Do you think it worked?
*Tourimise - a word I made up to mean that there is tourism

This seems a thingy-eyed idea to me. This is hardly planning for the future, encouraging people to log jam the area around Windermere. Personally I avoid this area like the plague during the summer. I go to the Lakes for peace and quiet so I frequent the areas around Bassenthwaite, Buttermere, Ennerdale etc. Following the Foot and Mouth epidemic the Lakes desperatley needed tourism but feel a planned approach would bring most benefits. The Lake District covers a vast area and there is a lot more to it than just Windermere!

Well it certainly HAPPENED. weather it actually WORKS is another matter. yes Windermere is best avoided in the summer. When you sail along the lake now there are so many houses built and being built round there it is quite scary! Give me the quieter lakes any day.
