What is the highest hill or mountain you have been to the top of?
Mine is probly the old man (lake district). But I wish to climb higher when I am older.
I also climb shropshire hills regularly which range from 500 meters upwards.

My highest is Ben Nevis. Did it twice, starting off at about 4 am. Both days were glorious blue sky days - until I reached the summit plateau! Then cloud appeared from no where and oblitorated the view. Also, on both occasions, as I descended, the clouds lifted, leaving the summit clear for the rest of the day GRRRR!
Did Snowdon once - never again! I got to the top at the same time as a train arrived and I could just as easily have been on a London railsway station. It ruined the magic for me.
I do most of the Lake District high Fells several times a year, plus do a lot on Isle of Arran.

First time in the UK we went up Ben Nevis, but we cheated and took the ride up and down! So I don't know that it counts. However in 2003 we went to the top of Skiddaw, it seemed to take forever! But the view was so worth it when we got there, not to mention the enormous sense of personal satisfaction at having accomplished something that challenging.

Like Paul, my highest mountain is Ben Nevis too. After completing the West Highland Way my mate and I treated ourselves to a climb of Ben Nevis. We ignored the tourist path and went round to the Mountain Rescue Post where we climbed the arĂȘte. Because of a rapid change of weather and sudden poor visibility we lost our way. As an escape route we used Five Finger Gully. What was mend to be a treat almost turned into a disaster.

I have tried to climb The Old Man of Coniston a few times, but being rather nervous of heights I have never reached the top. One of these days I will attempt the climb along with someone a little bolder to 'hold my hand'! The summit of The Old Man is one of the few 'Swallows and Amazons' locations I have yet to visit so it is now quite a high priority to conquer my fear and do this climb.

Dan I am kinda scared of hieghts but its so beautiful when you get to the top and it doesn't seem scarey at all.
I remeber much of the Old Man the first time I climbed it I was about 5 I crawled most of the way next to my mum.

Wow James that must have been a real adventure for you when you were 5! After reading your post I thought I can't put it off any more and will really go for it this summer. I wanted an excuse for a return visit anyway!

It wasn't a real adventure then I hated it I never wanted to see it again. But I braved it again 2 years ago when a fell run was on. It was an amazing view seeing the people running over the tops of the mountains.
I had a go at skiddaw when I was younger but I backed out half way up cos I was to tired.

Dan, we've got a weekend arranged in Coniston in June this year and one of the walks, probably on the Saturday, will be up the Old Man and a few of the others on the Horseshoe walk. Have a look at groups.msn.com/40sWalkersnorth There's loads of walks in the Lakes coming up as well as the Dales, Peak, Snowdonia & places around and in between.

Thanks for the link Mick. The Coniston weekend looks brilliant. I will be in contact through that site.

Hi James, How did you like Cader Idris? It was the first mountain I climbed (1980) and I can remember I felt rather proud. I took the path from Minffordd up to the point were you can see the tarn (what is it in Welsh?). Then I took the western edge up Cader Idris. I descended on the north over a ridge. I was on my own and new to this thing. There was a group going up and I kept them in view. For the first time on the summit of a real mountain is quite exhilirating! Theo

I went up to the tarn on the sothern side then I took the ridge over to the other tarn. I then turned back and went to the summit and I went down the long way (the eastern side). It was amazing.
